N. WISCONSIN - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is looking for pinecones, and red pinecones. Every year, the Forest Regeneration program looks for red pinecones to extract the seeds to grow new seedlings. There are stations around the state, including one in Rhinelander, where you can drop off bushels of red pinecones, and they’ll pay you $125 a bushel for properly collected cones. Every year, at least 120 bushels of cones are needed to supply enough seeds for the next year’s seedlings. To find out more about the program and to make sure you’re harvesting pinecones properly, contact your local Department of Natural Resources station.
