ONTONAGON - After being hunted into near extinction in the early 20th century, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has announced that Cougar cubs have been found living in Ontonagon County. State biologists have verified the existence of two cougar cubs seen living on private property in Ontonagon County. A local resident submitted photos of the animals at the beginning of the month, with the cubs appearing to be 7 to 9 weeks old. A large carnivore specialist for the DNR, Bran Roell led the team that authenticated the find, saying the cubs are a prime example of what a truly unique place the state of Michigan is. Its unknown where the cubs are currently and if they’re safe. Cougars are considered endangered animals in Michigan, meaning it is illegal to hunt or harass them. That includes trying to find their den.
