LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says she does not want to pick a fight with President-elect Donald Trump, but she won't back down from one either. In a speech shared with The Associated Press before delivery Wednesday at the Detroit Auto Show, Whitmer offers an olive branch to Trump while opposing his tariff plan. The diplomatic balance strikes a different tone from some Democratic governors and Whitmer's own campaign message on Trump as eyes turn already to what the leader of the purple state will do when her term is up in two years — and whether she will enter the 2028 presidential field.
