ASHLAND COUNTY (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has approved Enbridge's plan to reroute an aging oil pipeline in Ashland County. Enbridge wants to build a new 41-mile segment of pipeline to bypass the reservation of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. The tribe and environmental groups oppose the project. They argue it underestimates environmental damage and perpetuates fossil fuel use. The opponents are suing to reverse state construction permits. Enbridge has used Line 5 to transport crude oil and natural gas liquids since 1953. The company calls the federal approval a major milestone.

HURLEY - The Iron County Board of Supervisors have approved the hiring of a finance director, a move supporting a Finance Committee recommendation. Supervisor Paul Mullard cast the only dissenting vote at Tuesday’s meeting. The decision, following the appointment of county manager Jay Sween, aims to resolve past budgetary problems and navigate increasingly complex regulations. According to Sween and board member Mario Loreti, the new director is expected to be more cost-effective than hiring consultants, will streamline financial operations, and prevent fraud. County staff will now advertise the open position and begin interviewing.

WATERSMEET - The Watersmeet St. Vincent DePaul food pantry, is asking for the communities help. Typically, the pantry assists more than 60 families every month, and with the current political climate and government shutdown, that number is expected to increase with the upcoming holiday season. Right now, there isn’t enough funding to provide turkeys for Thanksgiving and hams for Christmas to all families in need. The potential delays in SNAP benefits will only make matters worse. In Michigan, approximately 13% of households, 1.4 million people—rely on SNAP, many of whom are children, older adults, or individuals with disabilities. Any delay in benefits will increase the demand on the pantry and other local agencies. Monetary donations can be sent to the Pantry’s PO Box, and product donations are needed and welcome at the township offices.
